Just so I'm clear, you are actually putting them into the folder where you will permanently leave them before importing- right? Also, Lightroom only has to search a small folder to find the new files, instead of searching a large and growing photo folder. I also think that for most purposes, the subfolders are unnecessary, since Lightroom will catalog all of the new files separately I just send them to a separate folder because it is no extra work, and if/when I want to copy and move a library, I will know exactly what I have, and where I have it. Lightroom doesn't seem to care where they are, as long as it knows where to link them to a catalog.Īnd, BTW, I think this would work just fine if you left the DNGs in the same folder with the RAWs, because the older LR can't see the RAWs anyway. Then I import those files into LR, and leave them in that folder. I run the batch through DNG converter, and send the converted DNG files to a separate folder I named "DNG converts" with a similar subfolder. I download CR3's from the card to a folder I named "CR3toDNG." I make a subfolder with the day's date (e.g., "1.24.02"). Converted them in that same folder and then went into LR to import the DNG files, but now have no option to put them where I want them and organize by date or anything else. Just to clarify I copied my CR3 file to a folder on my hard drive (not where I want them eventually, just temporary).

Where do the imported DNG files go to? I loose all options on where to import them or how to organize them like a normal import.ĭo I need to organize them into the folder I want them to eventually be in first?ĭoes importing DNG files automatically leave them in the same place you imported them from? (I'm not going to pay for three licenses to put it on all three of my computers.) So, I am still set up to do DNG conversions on my travel setup. Still, when I am traveling, I take a laptop that only has the standalone version of LR. After a month or so of the extra steps, I swallowed my pride and got a subscription at holiday prices, so on my primary computer, I can read the CR3's directly. It is still a little bit of a pain in the butt, but it is manageable. (I was amazed at how quickly DNG converter does the conversion.) Then import the DNGs into Lightroom. Then open up DNG converter, and select all of the files in that folder. First, download your memory card to their own separate file (I created a folder "CR3 to DNG" on my desktop. DNG conversion is pretty fast and easy, in two steps. I just went through the same thing when I got my R.

Luminar is probably something I'll keep even if I find something else, but I'd really like to find a real replacement for Lightroom and say goodbye to it forever. Luminar seemed like a good program to do the basics and maybe try the more intelligent editing stuff it does once in a while. Photo editing is more a task than fun for me. I'm not a big editor/manipulator of my photos. I just don't want to pay someone every month for the rest of my life to be able to edit my own photos. I'm open to anything and really don't mind spending money on the more expensive products. If anyone wants to suggest another photo editor/converter/cataloger I'm all ears. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I couldn't import the LR catalog but it would be nice to do. I thought Luminar could import LR catalogs but an answer on another forum seems to suggest no. Really I'm trying to get away from LR, but just wanted to ease into Luminar, or quite frankly anything else, while keeping my LR file structure and catalog for now.Ī while back I looked at several different options but forgot exactly what does what.

I guess I could copy the CR3 files to a temporary directory, convert them there and then import to LR form that folder. Do you know if it is easy to do a large batch of files? Yes I'm aware I can convert the CR3 to DNG with the converter. DNG files are supported in both Lightroom 6 and Luminar.

The problem is in your settings.Īll I can offer is to use the free Adobe DNG converter. Even when I "import as DNG" I don't think it sees the CR3's either. When trying to import photos from the SD card, LR Classic only sees he jpegs, and ignores the CR3 files.
